Why can people edit my posts? How does editing work?

Stack Internal encourages collaborative editing to keep questions and answers accurate, clear, and up to date.

You can always edit your own questions and answers. Depending on your site's plan, settings, and your reputation, you may also be able to edit other users' posts or suggest edits for review.

Stack Internal retains every edit in the post's revision history, so you can always see what changed and who made each change.

When should I edit a post?

Edit a question or answer when you can improve it without changing its original meaning.

Common reasons to edit a post include:

• Fixing grammar or spelling mistakes.
• Clarifying the meaning of the post.
• Adding important information from comments to the post.
• Correcting minor mistakes or adding updates.
• Adding helpful links or references.

Edits should improve the post and leave it better than you found it.

What happens after I edit a post?

After you save an edit:

• Stack Internal displays the latest editor alongside the original author.
• Stack Internal retains every edit in the post's revision history.
• Anyone can view a post's revision history to see what changed and who made each edit.
• Editing a question refreshes the post, moving it to the top of the homepage.

What if someone makes a poor edit?

If someone makes an edit that does not improve a post, other users can usually correct it.

Users with sufficient reputation can roll back the edit, restoring the post to a previous point in its revision history.

Review process for proposed edits (Stack Internal Enterprise only)

On Stack Internal Enterprise, any user can suggest an edit to another user's post.

If your reputation is below your site's post editing reputation required threshold, Stack Internal Enterprise treats your edit as a suggested edit and places it in a review queue. Users with the appropriate permissions review the suggested edit before it is applied.

Site admins, moderators, and users with reputation at or above the post editing reputation required threshold can edit posts immediately without going through the review process.
