Answers to common questions about data backups and the decommissioning process for Stack Overflow Internal Enterprise.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to my data when my contract ends?
When your contract ends, we'll decommission your site and take it offline. We'll then generate a final backup of your production data and make it available within two business days of shutdown.
Backups remain available for 30 days. After that, we permanently delete them (they can't be recovered). To avoid data loss, be sure to contact Stack Overflow Product Support with any questions about your data or database schema within 30 days of shutdown.
How do I download my data backup after my site is decommissioned?
We'll use SendSafely to send you a secure link to your final backup. Open the SendSafely URL to access your SAS (Shared Access Signature) download link, which requires Microsoft Azure Storage Explorer to open.
Download and save your backup within the 30-day window. If you need your backup removed earlier or have trouble accessing the link, contact Stack Overflow Product Support.
What format are my backups in, and how do I use them?
We provide your backup as a BACPAC (Binary Application and Component Package) file containing your content database, along with separate image files for any uploaded images. The BACPAC file contains your SQL database schema and content, which you can import into Microsoft SQL Server to browse and query your data.
Can I request a data export before my decommissioning date?
We don't provide data exports before the official decommissioning date. The export process is manual, and completed after we officially decommission your site. To preserve data before your decommissioning date, use the Stack Overflow for Teams API to export your content. You can also use the data download feature in your site settings.
